"Sheina
Gram - Fragments of a Diary" |
|
Tuesday
- July 29, 1941
They
drove away in the early morning. Rumours spread that they have been
sent to dig graves. The girls were taken to sweep streets. On meeting
each other, we marvelled that we were still alive. Every last one
of us was wishing for death. The conditions for the Jews are horrendous.
How long will we live in torment like this?
Rumour has it that in the evening people will be taken again. We
decided not to sleep at home. A farmer lets us spend the night in
his outdoor sauna
I sit with my eyes shut. In front of me,
the faces of the people who have been shot. It seams to |

Relatives
of Sheina Gram. City of Preili, 1936. On the left - Sheina's brother
Gutman, killed in the battle against Faschism in 1944. In the middle
- Sheina' s older sister Frieda, left in the police precinct during
the killing of the Jews of Preili on the 9th of August, 1941, where
she was raped and after a week, murdered. The rest of the people
in the photo - cousins; only two remained alive. |

Wednesday
- July 30, 1941.
Each hour
brings different news. Some say that they're going to take more
people, others, that they won't take any more people. Who should
we believe? Right now it's dreadful.
Each one of us is sitting, waiting for death. We found out that an
even more dreadful death is being prepared for the rest of the Jews.
We are going to be burned to death. The only thing that I marvel
at - how can we stand all this horror. My sister and I decide to
hide in the sauna.
Someone
comes with good news. No one is to be touched any more. They're
going to be satisfied with the people (already taken. - Editor's
Note).
My sister is taken to wash floors
The clock shows eight. We
can't go out in the streets. The weather is so lovely. Is everything
really over for the Jewish
youth? Will better times never come after all? |
Abraham
Faivisch Waisbord, Rabbi of
the city of Preili during the 1930's.
Killed together with the other Jews of
Preili in the summer of 1941. |
